044 – There “ain’t” Nothing Like the Real Thing!

Play

Today’s podcast calls us to guard against the counterfiet in our lives. The devil always is trying to lure us into slavery to the counterfiet. Jesus is the only way to be free. The episode was inspired by a sermon by Deacon Andre Metrejean at St. Mary Magdalen in Abbeville on Sunday. He illustrated our weakness for trinketry and cheap pleasure by reminding us how it is to shop with children. They will cry and cajole to get us to buy those plastic trinkets in the machines at the front of the store. Store keepers know well our human nature and how easy it is to make a few cents on us, when our kids cry for this stuff.

He went on to say that the devil lures us with internet trash, overeating, drinking, etc. into slavery. John Paul and I talked about how a while back the buzz phrase was everywhere, “What would Jesus do?” Bracelets, bumper stickers, tee shirts, billboards, etc. all sported the letters, “WWJD?” What Jesus would do is still an super important compass for our spiritual lives. It is never easy to know exactly what Jesus would do in every single circumstance. John Paul told the story of recently buying a new “used” car for his family. He and Jill had prayed over the needs of the family and his new business and they believe (and I do too) that the Lord had a car picked out for them. But they did experience concern over the expenditure. Was it in keeping with their desire to live more simply for the Lord? The holy tension is part of following Jesus.

We swapped stories of God’s will and considering what Jesus would do.

Our Scripture of the Day is John 14: 1 – 8. ….I am the Way, the Truth and the Life…” We can ask ourselves is this the Way Jesus would want me to do this; is this the truth on this subject; is my life being lived the as the life of Jesus is lived? We pray for our listeners and ourselves that we can choose the real thing and reject the counterfiet.
